1.1 Understanding the Purpose of Diegetic and Non-Diegetic Sound

1. Understanding the Purpose of Diegetic and Non-Diegetic Sound
Diegetic Sound

Diegetic sound is sound in a movie that has a source visible on the screen or whose source is implied to be present by the action of the film;
- The characters dialog
- Sound made by objects in story
- Music represented as coming from instruments in the story space ( = source music)

Diegetic sound is any sound presented as originated from source within the film's world. Diegetic sound can be either on screen or off screen depending on whatever its source is within the frame or outside the frame.

Another name for diegetic sound is 'actual sound'.

In this clip, the sounds are the sounds of the characters speaking to each other and the sound of objects that the characters use therefore all sound is diegetic.

This clip is also only diegetic since it is a conversation between two of the characters in the movie

Non-Diegetic Sound
Non-Diegetic sound is sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to the present in the action;
- Narrator's commentary
- Sound effects that is added for dramatic effect
- mood music
Non-diegetic sound is represented as coming from the a source outside story space.

The distinction between diegetic or non-diegetic sound depends on our understanding of the conventions of film viewing and listening.  We know of that certain sounds are represented as coming from the story world, while others are  represented as coming from outside the space of the story events.  A play with diegetic and non-diegetic conventions can be used to create ambiguity (horror), or to surprise the audience (comedy).

This video shows examples of some of the different types of non-diegetic like narration and music to make to scene more enjoyable and exciting for the viewer.

This video is the first 1 minute & 10 seconds into one of the Jaws movies. The first 1 minute and 10 seconds is non-diegetic and then changes to diegetic when the person is playing to harmonica.

2. Sourcing Appropriate Sound Accompaniment for a Video Production
I have chosen two websites that I am going to use for my short film. One of the websites has the diegetic sounds that I need and the other has the non-diegetic sounds that I need for my film.

Diegetic - https://www.soundsnap.com/node/54951
Non-Diegetic - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rP1EHZuWvFk

It is important that the sounds for my film are royalty/copyright free because if it isn't then my movie could be muted, deleted or even blocked. Another reason why it is important to use royalty/copyright free music and sounds is because some labels and artists might even sue.

3. Create and Record Appropriate Sound Accompaniment for a Video Production
I have created my own sound in my film by using dialogue and background sounds (door slamming closed). The device that I used to capture the sounds was the microphone on my iPhone.

4. Integrating Diegetic and Non-Diegetic Sound into a Video Project
When editing my film, all of the imported music and sounds are during the second half of the film.
To import the audio, I first dragged the audio file from my computer into the project box that is inside of premiere pro. Then to unlink the audio from the footage I right clicked it in the timeline then clicked unlink. The imported music was too loud so I had to turn it down. I did that by right clicking the audio in the timeline then selecting audio gain then changing it to around -10. I did not have to worry about the music being too loud during dialogue since the dialogue parts were only in the first half and the music starts in the last half.

5. Reviewing Strengths and Weaknesses of my Sound Sourcing and Sound Creation
1. I feel like my strengths for sourcing my audio was that I knew exactly what type of sound I wanted so that made it easier for me to find describe it when searching for it.
2. The area that I would like to improve on regarding sourcing audio is taking more time to listen to all of the audio in the selection to see if there is any sounds that fit better than what I want.
3. I feel like my strengths for creating my own audio were making it blend into the background of my movie so that it is not so noticeable.
4. The areas I would like to improve on when creating my own audio is creating more unique sounds rather than just background noises.
5. I feel like the music was perfect for the style of my film and the sound effects were a good fit for the what my movie is about.
6. The areas that I would like to improve on whilst integrating sound is finding non-diegetic music that is long enough for my scene however I made it work.
